The Hugger Hummingbird – this one is a bitter sweet blast from the past. We made three of these in total – we purchased the plans from Derek Hugger and said something about “how hard can it be” – and the rest is history.
There were hundreds of man hours in each of these. The prototype (that we still have) worked pretty well and then we refined the recipe for the two production versions. We were attemping to make a finely tuned mechanical system out of plywood – a material not really renowned for its ability to sustain a close tolerance – but it worked!
It’s quite nice to look back on this video – it was one of the first ones produced by James – sadly he no longer works of us but between him and Leon I think they really managed something pretty amazing.
