Introduction
Looking for a cost effective sign solution? If you need short term signage (say up to 12 months) then corflute (fluted polyproylene) might be the answer. Corflute is the material used to produce most real estate signs, as well as event and promotional signage. Corflute is lightweight and easy to handle and install.
Corflute has a slightly ribbed surface – it is not perfectly smooth which is noticeable but perfectly acceptable for this style of sign.
Corflute is also available in a wide range of colours. White is the typical choice but other colours might make sense, depending on design.
Bear in mind that corflute will not block out sun. Unless your graphics are produced using a blockout vinyl, if you have graphics on both sides of your panel and the sun shines through your panel, there will potentially be some interference causing a lack of clarity in your message.
A standard sheet size for corflute is 2440mm x 1220mm. Effective sheet utilisation by tailoring your sign panel size to make best use of the sheet will help save money.
Your corflute sign does not have to be a rectangle. Corflute can be cut to just about any shape you like using a digital cutter. Custom shapes makes a great solution for special displays and social media photography frames – and are easy to produce.
Thickness
Corflute is available in several thicknesses with the most common being:
- 3mm
- 5mm
- 8mm
Real estate signs are usually produced on 5mm corflute – it gives quite a bit more strength than the 3mm panels but is still nice and light. 8mm corflute is much stiffer and heavier – it is also quite a bit more expensive.
Corflute panels are prone to folding along the line of the flutes. Once they have a fold in them the sign is permanently weakened so it is important to be careful when handling panels. 3mm panels are quite flimsy – for a situation where the sign is exposed to wind, a 5mm panel is normally a better choice and costs only slightly more than 3mm alternative.
Longevity
Corflute can be used to produce an outdoor grade sign that will stand up to the weather for at least 12 months. Different print techniques can produce different results – typically you get what you pay for. Corflute signs are generally produced on a flatbed printer and are not laminated, so they will fade over time – however they are also generally much cheaper than signs produced using alternative materials. The most important thing is to make sure you know what you are getting and that the expected longevity of the sign matches your requirements.
Installation
Eyelets can be a great investment in the longevity of your sign and to aid with easy installation. If you are using cable ties, eyelets will reduce the risk of the cable tie pulling through the panel if it is exposed to wind. Even if you are screwing your sign to a post, the use of eyelets helps hold the sign in place and can add to the overall professionalism of the finished product.
If you don’t want to pay for eyelets it is simple enough to punch holes in your panel or you can just screw straight through it. A simple washer under the screw will reduce the chance of the sign panel being torn from its fixings in high wind.
For interior use, double sided tape and velcro are both useful installation options as the panels themselves are so light.
